In connection with a storm of protest against the proposal of the Post and Telegraph Department to use stamp obliterating postmarks on letters as a means of raising revenue from advertising, it is now practically certain that the scheme will not he proceeded with. The Secretary of the Department lias recommended the Minister not to proceed with it', and Hon. J. G. Coates (Postmaster-General! states he intends to advise Cabinet against, the project. TRAM COLLISION. * AUCKLAND, December 18 s A collision occurred between two tra men rs at Reinuera last night. One motonnan. Hippell, sustained slight injuries. Tho other motonnan jumped clear after applying tile brakes. One car was extensively damaged, the forepart being more or less wrecked. The passengers in both cars escaped with a shaking.
LABOUR ATTITUDE. WELLINGTON. December 18. Up to the present, the attitude which Labour will take in the event of Parliament being called together at the end of January, has not yet been determined. No meeting of the Labour Party will he held before Christmas. Tt is possible that the members of the Party will not assemble until a week before the session opens. At the present moment. Labour claims to be the official Opposition. One thing is considered certain, that is that if Air AATlford moves a vote of no-confidence in the Massey Government, it will he supported by the Parliamentary Labour Party. AA’hat course the Labour Party will follow in the event of M” AVilford forming a Ministry, remains to be seen. This is cue of the points which will have to he decided by the Parliamentary Labour Party when it meets. A CHRISTCHURCH FIRE. CHRISTCHURCH. December 18. A fire to-night completely gutted the billiard-table factory ol Lutjohann and Co., iii Victoria Street. It did extensive damage to the printcry of \lex AA ildcy Ltd., and damaged windows in the Salvation Army Citadel. The (lames had a goal hold when discovered, and the brigade had over an hour’s task in gaining control. Tn AA ihley’s premises the upper portion was charred, and a large quantitv of fruiting and stationery destroyed, while on the lower Hour much havoc was wrought b.v water.
