The Political Position.
SESSION IN- JANUARY PROBABLE. (Lyttelton Times Correspondent) WELLINGTON, December 13. A Cabinet meeting was held this afternoon when the political position doubtless received solo attention. Ilic Prime Minister’s only public communication was an assurance to the people of the Dominion that he will take the. constitutional course. Though Air Massey is not prepared to discuss details of procedure, it is clear
that his supporters’ views previously telegraphed are correct, taut an oailx session, probably in January, is eoitnin. Official advice regarding the Oauiaru election shows that Air -AFaepherson is definitely elected. This means that the Prime -Minister must face Parliament in a minority of four, also having the responsibility of proposing a candidate for the Speakership. The Liberals are now a compact party of twenty-four, with the possibility of close support from at least ono of the two Independents. Air Statlmm (Dunedin) and Air Jordun (Alanakau). A jubilant announcement by the Labourites that they have succeeded to the position of official Opposition thus falls short by at least eight members. Possibly the Labour attitude is based oil confident anticipation of future developments, as there is an overwhelming majority in
the new Parliament against official Labour having the dominating voice in policy. Simultaneously with the Cabinet meeting to-dnv there, was a conference in the room of the leader of the Opposition ol the members of tlie Lib-real-Lahour executive. Alessrs AVilford leader, Sidey, deputy leader, Forbes, Ye itch and Masters. It was not tinexpected that Air AVilford’s annouwement was brief and indefinite— “The executive has met and discussed the position, hut as the party lias not been consulted there is no statement for publication.” A report that Government supporters will meet in Wellington this week is incorrect, being probably based on the fact that a complimentary dinner to Sir Francis Bell on his return from 'England is being held on Thursday night. MR MASSEY’S DECISION. PARLTAAIEXT TO A!EFT. WELLINGTON. Dec. U. “I nm going to call together the members of tbo Govtvnment party as soon after the holidays as can be arranged,” stated the Prime Min*stcr to a “New Zealand Times" reporter tonight. “The Government.” lie added, ‘‘has decided to convene a short session of Parliament early in the New Year.” “AYill that he in January?” asked the reporter. “1 can’t say.” replied the Prime Alinister “until after the Party meeting lias been held.”
