THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES.
The European Situation. Mr Lloyd George suggests that the United States, which a few years ago had to sacrifice thousands of its young men upon European battlefields, has an interest in French schemes of annexation in the Rhineland. “America and Britain standing together, ’ he sous, “alone prevent a catastrophe. That is a trite remark, but it appears none the less true with every page ot history that has been turned since the Versailles Treaty was signed. If we cannot depend upon an efiective and loyally-supported. League of Nations to" safeguard the peace of the world—an alternative to which Mr Lloyd George makes no reference—then cooperative action by tho Anglo-Saxon nations seems the next best insurance against war. and tho only other practicable insurance. So l’ar Mr iJoyd George has spoken wisely and veil. —Lyttelton Times.
