I Wellington. has written to the Chair-j limn of the Westland County Council : as follows: Re Kiiniara Junction to Ivumara. : and Kumarn. to Ross Roads. • “As you are aware the above men- 1 tinned roads were declared County roads by Order-in-Coum-i! published ' in Gazette. No 81. of the 2!st .November. 1912. page 3303. but by arrangement with your Council the Department ha.s since been maintaining them. The question of the Government continuing such inaiutainnnee has recently been very carefully considered. and I have to inlorm you that the Government docs j not propos;* to continue such maintenance. “'Tnler these circumstance.', therefore. the said roads will Henceforth i .• under the control of year Council. and your Council will he ic'poii'ihl- for the maintenance of same." This very unwelcome mil ificat ion reached the County Chairman to-day. and the following telegram was dospotriied ,to the Mini-lev of Dublin Works at one*-: “Astounded at propreal band over Kumarn .Junction to Ross main rnatl at moment's notice. Respectl idly suggest that as your Department’s tclimate- for icainroeam'• of the roads is provided for up to . 31st March next, more reasonable notice be given Council to enable member: liiciel and consider position: also obtain report from Overseer as to condition road and bridges along route. Council sat yesterday, will meet again. Jan. 9th.''
