POLLARD’S PICTURES. "DOLLAR FOR DOLLAR” TO-NIGHT.
Pollard's present to-night at Princess Theatre Frank Keenan as Marcus Card in “Dollar for Dollar, a millionaire who has made his wealth by shady methods. He is at heart, a good fellow, but has succumbed to the tricky practices of certain forms of “big business.” His rival is Victor Mordant, who has also made much money in Wall Street. Mordant, as Card discovers, is a bigamist, having an insane wife incarcerated in a private sanatorium. Mordan’t son, Teddy, is by his second wife, and therefore illegitimate. Marcus Card is fond of Teddy, in spite of his hatred of the father, and takes an interest in the young man’s affection for Dorothy .Marteen, a pretty young society girl. Card suffers a shock when Dorothy’s mother calls at his apartments by appointment and victimizes bim in a blackmail scheme. Mrs Marteen explains, by way of palliating her method of acquiring her living, that Card was the cause of her busband’s ruin and death. Card is forced to see the truth and instead of hating Mrs Marteen. feels sorry for her. The climax of the story is reached when Victor Mordant is mysteriously killed. Gard suspects Mrs Marteen of the crime, since she also hates Mordant, hut it develops that the dead man’s insane wife did tile deed. Two love matches follow the tragic death of Mordant. McLEAN’S PICTURES. DOUBLE STAR PROGRAMME. FRIDAY. On Friday evening Air McLean presents at the Princess Theatre a grand double star programme. The first is a Paramount special, “39 East” starring Constance Binnie, and is a superb drama with some very fine scenery, and there is also some splendid acting. The second star is “A Dollar a Year Man" starring the ever-popular Fatty Arluickle. Fatty spent all Grandpa’s easy money in his fun-hit “Brewster’s Millions,” and now he’s got a dollar a year coming in as a detective. And didn’t lie work overtime to earn his Salary. A roaring farce that needs no magnifying glass to find its laughs. Don't come if you have a split lip. The Orchestra will supply a selected programme of music.
THE STBASSBURG CLOCK. EXHIBITION TX IIOTCTTTKA. The wonderful working of the worldfamous Straslnirg clock will commence a short season in Hokitika to-morrow ( Friday). The model performs all the intricate and wondrous working of the graft original—the procession of the twelve Apostles, the appearance of the K-vioiir. Peter’s denial of Christ, the crowing of the cock of the tower, the vistation of Satan, and the appearance of the grim figure of death. All these movements take place every Id minutes. Among tin' scientific dials are seen the Ecclesiastical Compute, tin Georgian calendar, the phases of the moon, the grand orrery showing the various planets making their revolution round the sun. etc. This is one ■of the most interesting and educational exhibitions touring tlio world. The exhibition visited Hokitika, in 1880. It lias been shown in every civilised world. As the model is to return to its home in Alsace-Lorraine at the- termination of its Xew Zealand tour, readers should avail themselves of the opportunity of viewing this masterpiece of mechanical skill.
