Mr Cavill went to .America some years ago, and is now Instructor of swimming at the New A ork . One of those who have attempted to swim the English Channel, Mr Cavill is a good long-distance man in the water. He has to his credit a swim of 48 miles from Catalina Island to Son Pedro, in California, undertaken in the summer-time when the water was at a comfortable temperature. Mr Cavill intends to spend a Christmas holiday in Australia. He is accompanied by bis daughter, Miss Theodore, who is reputed to lie a capital exhibition diver.
A meeting of the provisional conn mittee in connection with the Westland Industrial Exhibition, was held at the' County Chambers at 3.30 o’clock yesterday (afternoon. Present: Messrs G. A. Perry (chair), W. Jeffries, (!. Davidson, R. Wild and D, J. Evans. Apology was made for the absence of Mr Butler and Mr Aitkon. Mr Jeffries submitted, a lengthy report in regard to information gleaned ill Cliristehurc(i in respect to the exhibition now running there. The report was discussed and further consideration adjourned until 8 o’clock this evening, to enable members to consider fully the more important details. It was resolved to have a ground plan prepared of cxistiiig buildings to ascertain available space, and also to show adjacent streets and sections to supply information as to room for annexe accommodation.
The St Mary’s euchre and dance held last evening proved very successful. Card enthusiasts attended in full force to compete for the prizes which were kindly donated. Competition was very keen, no less than eight competitors in both sexes tied for first honors which after a draw Mrs H. Fitzgerald and Mrs E. Jlcenan were declared first and s.i.cnd respectively for the ladies’prizes, and .Messrs J. Freitas and H. E. Nightingale for the gents. The President, Mr F. Groufsky, then took the opportunity of declaring the result of places secured for the number of points won during the sc ison. Mrs A. Sumner with 111 points was placed first and was presented with a silk jersey jumper, donated by the Committee and Mr Thos House winner of the gentleman's section with 108 points was presented with a handsome travelling rug presented by Rev. Dr Kennedy. Dancing was then indulged in, a gay crowd of young folk gracing the floor. A welcome was extended to the members of Miss King’s orchestra whb attended to assist in supplying the music and an announcement was made that on the following evening this combination wore conducting a dance at the Town Hall for the benefit of the School memorial tencci. and for such a deserving object, all present were invited to attend. Besides the orchestra. Misses A. Daly, M. Giese and M. Pascoo- assisted at the piano and Mr E. Stewart made an efficient M.C.
