HISTORICAL FIND.
AX EGYPTIAN DISCOVERY. OF ANCIENT TOMBS. iI’STiMT.IAN AND N.Z. CARLE ASSOCIATION. LONDON. Nov 30. Details have been received of an important historical discovery in the A alley of Kings, the. .site of ancient Pitches, on tlio left bank of the Nile, near Luxor, where excavations have been proceeding for sixteen years. The discovery, consists ol the Royal Necripolis of' the Theban Empire, situated directly below the tomb of Ramcsis the Sixth. Seals of tiie tomb wire found intact. The tomb contained three magnificent State conchas, gilt, and an exquisitely carved bid. beautifully carved, gilt, and inlaid with ivory and precious stones. Innumerable boxes oi wonderful workmanship bur ngilt inscriptions, oil some of which were painted a bunting scene. They contained royal robes handsomely embroidered. precious stones and golden sandals. I utankhmnen’s state throne was discovered, and is regarded as one of tile most wonderful objects ever iound. Anothoi C handier contained many other beautiful articles ol furniture and decora live art. Most of the treasures are fairly well preserved and others are in a precarious ’state, but it is hoped, that careful handling will preserve nearly alb There is no doubt tne collection is part of Tutnnkliuineti's Mineral paraphernalia. which was removed from the original tombs to escape the depredation's Ot thieves. The seals and other piieoautions .suggest that .ns, lectors during the reign of Romcsts the Nutt entered and reelosed the Chan.bo.-s. after robber attacks. The discoveries w ill enormously increase the kiiouledgi of ancient Egypt. There is still a tbrid Chamber to explore, where m \ be found Tutankbumen’s actun tomb Among other remains found. an vast quantities of provisions including trussed docks, baunel.es of ycnismi aI ~.,,-kcd in boxes, wreaths still looking 'overoreen. and also rolls of papyrus Which are expected to yield a mass ot information. Among the valuables a heavily gilt chair v.itl. portraits ot the King and Queen, the whole encrust'd with turquoise and cniieliaii |-,psis. Two life sized hit..,.,cozed statues of the King. woriud in holding a golden stick and >■ ■ ■ _ statues have handsome teat 1. i ‘itelv carved bauds, and glass h ' ilres,' richly studded with gems- l'< also lour chariots, tin sun w hich are studded with sen,.-,-ree, oilstones.
