MASQUERADE BALL.

CARNIVAL GATHERING AT THE OPERA HOUSE. There was a very large attendance at the Westland Opera House last night when a grand carnival hall llancy dress and masquerade) was held- under the auspices of the Ladies’ Hockey Club. The room was bright and gay with colors, as befitted the carnival note. Visitors were present from till parts ot the district, including hockey club representatives from Groynioiilli and Blackball. The decorations were novel and striking. .The right note of gaiety was struck by the parti-coloured streamers trained from tbo ceiling, and the flags and greenery and electric lights were made brighter and gayer by the numerous balloons suspended round the room. In the central dome there was an electric device which, at intervals, sprinkled confetti on the dancers below. The floor ' was very crowded for dancing, and was under ihe able control of Air H. A. Thompson AI.C. The Royal Orchestra supplied the musical programme under -Mr Lawn’s leadership in its usual finished style. Extras were kindly played by .Misses King and I’aseoe and Air Reynolds, and were all encored. The ladies served a lavish supper, and ail went merry as a marriage boll—joy being unconfincd. The prizes for fancy costumes were awarded by * Aiesdamc-s Varrnll and Lynn. The lady winners were: .Miss Lovett, Lady of the Harem: Miss Lewis, a match: .Miss Alary Crabs:,n. gold lip cigar; Aliss Mona Pnxcoo. Ai.O. cigar; and Airs Brookes, an old dame. Dancing v.as kept up to a late hour. At a suitable interval Air D. .!. Evans, president of the Club, thanked the visitors for their patronage, an I specially thanked the members of the sister chilis who had come from the north. The help of tho judges of fancy costumes was alsi appreciated, and best wishes extended for a successful conclusion of lhe function. If was announced that a juvenile dance would he held in the hail to-nigld, the admission being lid for children, and b for adults. No doubt there "ill he another large attendance.
