Mr Cleary lias proved a very popular officer of the firm, and lias made many friends in this district who will regret bis departure, but will wish him well in his new locale. Mr IT. W. At the Magistrate Court. Greymoutli yesterday, before Mr Meld nun, S.M., Charles Stewart and Abraham Hudson were charged, the former that he stole a. bottle of gin from the Midland Hotel on October 9th., and Hudson with receiving the bottle, knowing it to have been stolen. AA'isdoni, at the residence of his son-in-law, Air Tom McNeill. Air AA’isdoni had been a resident of Cobden for over 50 years, and during most of that time he had been engaged in business as a builder and carpenter. He was born in Nova Scotia 70 years ago. Deceased was widely known and greatly respected.

The Hen T. At. AA'ilford, Leader o the Liberal Party, has telegraphed a very cordial message to Air Seddon, the Liberal candidate for AA’estland. The message is from Christchurch, at the close of his Canterbury tour. Mr AA’ilford says (inter alia): South Canterbury" meetings records for attend--ance and enthusiasm. The fire in the Blackball Aline assumed such serious proportions that it has been found necessary to seal off tlie whole of the workings, with the exception of No 1 section, which, however. is nearly worked out. The result is that practically the whole of the employees of the Blackball Coal Company are automatically rendered idle. It is estimated that it wall lie at least six months before any attempt will lie made to re-open the sealed-off sections. Yesterday strenuous efforts were made by a party to rach the pumps in No 0 section (open), but finally after getting within a chain of tlieir objective, the party had. to abandon tlie effort owing to the prevalence of the dreaded black damp.
