drainage proposals at kokatahi. A meeting of settlers interested was held at Kokatahi on Wednesday evening to discuss the proposals of the Government engineers for the drainage of the area of swamp lands in Kokatahi district between Raft Creek and Duck Creek consisting of 3400 acres. Mr W. T. Morpeth (Commissioner of Crown Lands) was present to discuss with the settlers the proposals. Mr L. H. .Morel was voted to the Chair and the proposals were very fully discussed. At the conclusion of the discussion Mr Carter moved and Mr Williamson seconded:—-“That the proposed scheme he adopted subject to final confirmation by a majority of tlio ratepayers affected, provided (1) The rates are spread over a term of 30 years; (‘2) The rates should not ho struck for five years from the completion of the work, loss of interest being provided for at the end of the term; (3) that the work should he carried out under the Swamp Drainage Act, 1915; (4) That the rate should lie struck on an acreage basis.” The motion was agreed to. The proposed drainage scheme is estimated to cost about £SOOO, the Government finding the money, a rate to be struck over a term of years covering interest and sinking fund. At the conclusion a hearty vote of thanks was accorded Air Morpeth for his attendance and information and to the Chairman for presiding. *
