From Postmaster-General replying in regard to returning the 'Hokitika post office to a chief office and regretting the change could not be made, as the new ‘arrangements .were working satisfactorily, and special arrangements had been made to withdraw moneys on demand! from the postal havings branch.—-Received.
GENERAL. 1 The Secretary reported in respect to the late visit of the lecturers from the Philosophical Institute. (Canterbury, and stated a loss had been incurred on the visit. The Chairman expressed appreciation at the value of the lectures given, and it was a matter of regret more people did not attend to enjoy them.
The Secretary reported there was a credit balance of £4. Tt was resolved to vote £3 3s to the Canterbury’s •League’s advertising scheme. The Chairman stated that the preliminary arrangements had been made in regard to the walking tour at Christmas of the Christchurch Y.M.C.A. The hall had been secured and facilities for transport arranged along the walking route from Ross to AVaiho Gorge which would he done in three stages; first day to Uari Tlari; second day to AVataroa; third day to AVaiho. It was stated that probably Stuart and Chapman Ltd., would arrange transport ' from Ross to AVaitaha Junction to i make the first walking stage easier. It I was resolved to advise Mr Kinuear. The matter of advertising the district to better effect now that the railway ,traffic would open up shortly was referred to it, and it was resolved to suggest to the Tourist Department that colored poster sheets of West Coast scenic attractions be prepared for advertising purposes, and that stops he taken to otherwise advertise the scenic features and attractions of the district. The subject of reafforestation was mentioned and regret was expressed that the Forestry Department was not taking up the work in a practical way. It was resolved to ask the Department to pursue an active policy along the lines proposed by the Director in AVestland. where climatic conditions offered the best prospects for success. Air Butler stated that in 1917, he had recommended the Miuistry of Forestry to take up the matter of training .men on active seivice in Europe in regard to forestry matters. but nothing had been done. Reference was made .by some of the speakers to the interest aroused the previous evening in the exhibition project. and appreciation was expressed at the public interest displayed, as auguring well for the undertaking. Mr AVild. All Butler and others spoke r.f the prospects of success, and of the interest taken by Canterbury people in particular in the coming event. Mr Orr, also, expressed pleasure at the prospects in view and hoped special attention would be devoted to mining. The meeting concluded at 8.20.
