INDUSTRIES EXHIBITION

OPENS AV CHRISTCHURCH. rBY TKLEQDAPH —PER PRESS ASSOCIATION CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 18 To secure the support of the gen ral public for goods produced in their own country is the main object of the promoters of the 1022 Industries exhibition here, which was officially opened at King .Edward Barracks to-day. The exhibition itself is an unprecedented event in the history of New Zealand industry. It is by tar the largest exhibition of its kind ever held in the Dominion, and its success is assured, not only by the great number of exhibits, which have , been sent, but also by great interest being created in other centres. Cities and towns from Auckland to Bluff have their own particular exhibit, and besides these, the various industries of all sorts an 1 classes are exceptionally well represented. -Manufactories and producers of raw materials and a hundred an! one industrial concerns throughout tlio land have contributed to the general quota, which covers truly a bewildering range. There are approximately from 250 to 300 exhibitors, and all have gone to much trouble in th arrangement of their particular stands. Hundreds of stalls line the avenues, and on each of these, tastefully" arranged, are samples of the result of Dominion progressiveness. They are of bewildering profusion. King Edward Barracks not being large enough, there has been built in Cashel Street, an annexe thereto onetenth of a mile long, and of tv breadth sufficient to meet the heavy demand upon space. The two buildings have a total floor space of 70,0(10 square feet.

The exhibition was opened by Lady Jellicoe, who read a telegram from the Governor-General, conveying the warmest good wishes for the success of the exhibition, while Hr Massey telegraphed expressing the hope that the object the industrialists of New Zealand had in view , would he successful from educative and .financial standpoints. The Hon Secretary, speaking on behalf of the Government, said the progress of industries in New Zealand had been great. He had visited industries in the ninin centres, and had been astonished at what was being produced. There now, was concentrated an organisation on behalf of industries as a whole.
