BISHOPS ON LIQUOR QUESTION.
Bishop of Durham.— “ Prohibition can not be reconciled with the tradition of Christianity, or with the teaching and example of Christ. Accordingly the churches must needs lie restive under a law which seems to challenge their most sacred convictions. “’l'lie only security against excess which is worth having is a habit of self-control, and the formation of that habit is endangered, if not rendered impossible by the ‘cotton-wool policy’ of Prohibition.” Bishop of Hereford: —“Prohibition is a ‘throw-back’ to the discredited methods of coeicion. It violates civic self-respect. Its brutal simplicity insults reason and destroys liberty. It can but breed in England what it has bred in America—arrogance, hypocrisy ami discontent. AVliat better authority could be obtained on this all-important question? Abate Continuance.
