On Wednesday afternoon the Hour was entrained at Timaru and it reached Roefton on Thursday night and Hokitika on Friday morning, thus relieving the danger of a bread shortage. The death took place at Black’s Point about midnight on Wednesday of Mr John Ellery, the well-known mine manager. The deceased had been in failing health for some considerable time past, suffering from that dire complaint, miner’s phthisis, and his end was not unexpected. Mr Ellery was born at Red Ruth, Cornwall, and was (ill years of age. lie arrived in 'Reefton nearly 10 years ago. He had worked in the various mines as miner and shift boss, and for four years was manager of the lveep-it-Dark Aline. He leaves a widow and family of three sons and one daughter, who will have the sympathy of a wide circle of friends. The interment took place yesterday at the Suburban Cemetery. A sudden death took place yesterday on the road from Boss. Charles Stewart, an old resident of the district was being removed to the hospital for treatment, when he passed away. Deceased was a native of Ireland, 63 years of age, a baker by trade, and a relative of Mr P. Clare of Boss.

A painful accident happened to another busbman at lvainaka recently, he being Mr W. -Jamieson, of Hatter’s Terrace, Nelson Creek. While using an axe in the hush, the blade was driven into his instep, causing a very severe wound. He had to he conveyed to the Grey River Hospital, where medical attention was given, but his condition has since been somewhat serious.
Yesterday afternoon a man named Thomas Cole, a bushman, working in the hush at Kamaka, was killed by a limb of a tree falling on him. He had only been in the district about two weeks and very little was known about him. The deceased *was a returned soldier, about 35 years of age. and is believed to have a brother in the North Island. He was working tor the Stafford Sawmillers Co. and was one of Lindbom’s party. A mate, named Harrington, was near the deceased at the time and saw the limb falling. He called out, hut receiving no answer went to see what had happened, and found that the limb had hit the de-l-eased on the face, and killed him ins’nntly. Dr MeKav. ol Greymouth, was sent for, hut on arrival could only pronounce life to be extinct.
