Westland Industrial Exhibition.
(MEETING OF PROVISIONAL COMMITTEE.
A meeting of the Provisional Con mittee of the Westland Industrial Tu bilee Exhibition was held at the County Chambers at 4 o’clock. Present: Mr G. A. Perry (Mayor) in the '.hair, Hon. H. L. Michel M.L.C., Mo.s. rs W .T: Jeffries, R.. Wild and IV J Butlm. Apologies were made for th-* absence of Messrs G. Davidson and A. \Hkeu. ■ engaged at other meetings Air Evans, Hon. Secretary, reported as to the general position and submitted the following report for adoption : 1. That a public meeting of business people and all interested in promoting the proposed Industrial Exhibition to mark the Diamond Jubilee of the province of Westland and the opening of the East and West Const railway he held at the Town Hall, on or about Monday. November 20th., at 8 p.m., to consider the proposals, 2. That the following Divisional Committees lie nominated at the public meeting: Buildings Committee: Messrs W. J. Butler (Chairman). R. F. 3. That local bodies be asked to contribute (subject to legislatixe authority being obtained) to the expenses and cost of the Exhibition, and the Westland County Council and Hokitika Borough Council be asked to contribute up to £250 each as may be required.
J. That Mr Wild when next visiting Christchurch he deputed to negotiate with Mi W. R. Hay ward as to terms for taking up the position of Director; and further that Mr Wild arrange for a visit of Mr T. W. Woodroffe, architect, to give advice as to the layout for the exhibition (1) by utilising existing buildings and erecting annexes in the vicinity of the Town Flail, and (2) by erecting buildings on Cass Square. .5. That the period and dates for the proposed Exhibition be now considered.
0- That the Finance Committee when set up be empowered to open a Guarantee T,ist in respect to tlio expenses attending the Exhibition project.—Received.
On the motion of the Hon. Michel the. report was adopted, and it was resolved to hold a public meeting as suggested next Monday night to put-con-crete proposals before the people.
It was decided that the exhibition should open prior to the Christmas holidays, 1923 and extend to about the end of January or lieginning of February, 1924.
Upon a discussion in regard to finance Mr Wild moved ns a suggestion for the public meeting that a limited liability company with a share capital up to £5,000 he proposed, calls to bo made up to 25% of the holdings, to supplement contributions from the local bodies. Mr Jeffries seconded the motion, which was agreed to unaniin on sly.
As to locale the Camp Street site, and the utilisation of the adjacent buildings. including the Town Hall, Drill Hall, Horticultural Hall and Houston’s stores was most in favor, with the idea of building annexes at the rear of the Bank of Now Zealand and in Camp Street, which will require to be closed to traffic for the purpose. Some of the members expressed the intention of -muting the Christchurch Exhibition while 'n progress thi§
month, and meeting the managers of same in regard to various matters, including purchase of suitable material, stands etc. /
It was resolved to a'sk the several ladies and gentlemen nominated for various divisional committees to attend the public meeting nexi/Monday night, and take an active part,in the proceedings.
Tlio meeting then adjourned to await the decisions of .the public meeting.
