THE WILLIAMS CASE. AUCKLAND, Nov. £ The Grand Jury returned “No B.dl” against Cecil N. Williams, charged with alleged carnal knowledge of a girl under the age ol consent. This charge was the outcome of a- birth on a launch in the course of a harbour trip. In his charge to .the Grand Jury, Justice Herdman said it was clear that the information had been laid within six months of the alleged commission of the offence. If tho jury concluded there was any doubt, they might find “no bill.”
U.S.A. ATTITUDE. AGAINST TURKS’ MOVE. NEW YORK, Nov. 7. The New York “Times’s” Washington correspondent states:—Basic information from White House outlines the following a s the United States policy towards the most recently development i„ the Turkish situation:—All the sources of American diplomacy will lie utilised to prevent the Turks from gaining permanent control of the Dardanelles. The administration state that, while co-operating with the Allies in every feasible way to checkmate any Turkish attempt to alter the international character of the Dardanelles, America is not prepared to employ her military or naval forces. Aliy fighting will have to tie done by the Allies alone. The U.S.A. administration feels that public sentiment in the United States would not support such a war. Further since Mr Hughes is opposed to empty tin-cats, he will not make any ge-t which he cannot back up.
