INCOME TAX DEFAULTERS. AUCKLAND. November (i. Three defendants pleaded guilty in the Police Court to having failed to make returns of their income. Mr Paterson, for the Crown, said that lie had been instructed by the Solicitor-General, on beliali of the C‘.mtnissioner of Income Tax. to make application for the imposition of a heavy penalty as the penalties in U e past had not acted as a sufficient deterrent. Persons lined last ver were again offenders this year. The failure of taxpayers was to make no return and allow the commissioner to make default of the assessment. If the assessment was then in their opinion too high they would lodge an objection and furnish the return. These prosecutions were intended as a warning to the public. and. therefore, he asked that the penalties imposed he substantial. G. Alexander. S. S. Clarke, and A. I). Wilson were each lined £5 and ordered to pay C2 2s solicitor’s co-ts.
