SUGAR DEAL. OAMARU, Nov. 6. The purchase by the Government from the Colonial Sugar Refining Coy. (as recently stated by cable from Sydney) -of a further 20,000 tons of raw sugar, was confirmed to-day by the Hon Afr Lee (Minister of Industries and Commerce). “In making the purchase,” said the Af.inisler, “The Government was largely guided by the fact that the prior Government contracts furnished ' supplies of sugar to the Dominion up to tho month of February, 1923 only, and it was decided b.v the Cabinet to purchase, at favourable terms offered, the balance of raw sugar available at Fiji, so as to ensure supplies, for the full jam season, and up to the end of June, 1923. By averaging the prices over the recent purchase, there will he no increase in the retail price up to the end of June 1923. New Zealand will still ho in the position of marketing .sugar at a lower price than in most parts of the British Empire, and at about 1-jd per lb lower than the price now ruling in the Commonwealth.’'
