GENERAL ELECTION.
-Mr T. E. Y. Fed don, the sitting member for Westland, opened bis election campaign in the extreme north of the electorate last night. The Totnra, Flat-Almura district has again hoen added to the AVostlnnd electorate having been transferred from the Buller electorate in which it was situated for a period previously. .Mr Soddoll spoke both at Totara Flat and Ahaura last night. The short time between now and polling day will keep Mr Seddon on the move constantly, and it will be necessary to speak two or three times a day to get round the electorate. \ cry satisfactory meetings w ere held on both occasions last night.
At Totara Elat there was a splendid meeting, though called early in the evening. Mr D. Bayhntt. M.C.C.. occupied the chair, and Air Seddon’s address covering a considerable amount of ground was well received. At the close Air Hugh Gilmer proposed and Air Daniel O’Leary seconded the mo-' Don of thanks and confidence which was adopted unaimously. The meeting at Ahaura was held in the new Memorial Ha.ll which Air Feddon had been invited to open, hut which, owing to duties at the parliamentary session, he had not been able to comply with tho request. Air James Hargreaves J.R., was in the chair, and the. candidate’s address was excellently received. Several questions wore asked and answered to satisfaction, after which Air G. Harcourt was the proposer of the vote of thanks and confidence .and ATr J. Ward tho seconder. Tho vote was adopted unanimously. To-night Air Seddon speaks at Nelson Creek and Ngahore, and visits Ot-ira line to-morrow. On Thursday Air Seddon is to speak at Greymouth, and on Saturday at Kmna.ra, with Otira to follow on Monday next. The date for Air Seddon’s address at Hokitika, is Wednesday, November 22nd., and at Ross on Friday, November 2-11li after which a visit to South AVestlnnd is mapped out. Air Seddon will address meetings nightly, right up to election eve, visiting as many parts of the electorate in the interval a.s time will permit.
Mr Soddon’s election committee meets at Hokitika on Thursday night at 7.30 o’clock.
Mr .T. Steer, the Reform candidate for Wnstland will address the electors at the Westland Opera House to-mor-row evening at 8 o’clock. Ladies are specially invited to attend. A meeting of supporters of Mr James O’Brien, Labour candidate for Westland will be bold at the Westland Opera House on Thursday evening for the purposo of forming a committee to promote his candidature. Representatives of country districts, and Indies specially invited to attend. The meeting takes place at Bp.m. On Sunday afternoon there was a very enthusiastic and well attended meeting of the supporters of Labour held at Kimu in the Town Hall for the purpose of forming a lommittee to promote the candidature of Air Janus O’Brien for the Westland election. A very strong committee, numbering twenty-one members, was elected to carry on the good cause of Labour in the coming contest. The committee elected Mr Al. Keenan as Chairman and Alt’ K. CHRISTCHURCH, November C. Sir Joseph Ward’s friends venture tho opinion that he will decide to contest Invercargill against the Hon. J. A. Honan.
