On Saturday afternoon when business on the Melbourne races was liveliest. the police raided and held possession for three hours of the premises of seventeen city hookinakrs. I hoy seized the hooks and detained the visiting customers, also they hooked telephone bets. They secured some hundreds of pounds. Most of the bookmakers were absent in Melbourne, the businesses being run by deputies at the time of the raid. DROWNED IN HARBOUR. SYDNEY. November 5. Charles Heath, unable to swim, fell from a sailing boat in Sydney Harbour yesterday, and was drowned in the presence of throe brothers who unsuccessfully dived for the body.
