Captain William Made, representative of Manchester Ship Canal Company was accorded a civic reception. He explained the canal cost, six million, which was guaranteed by rates in Manchester. Instead of being a burden the company was enabled last year to allocate thirty-five thousand out of profits for rate relief. Fifty-seven per cent of the meat sold in Manchester came from New Zealand and Australia through London. The demand would he greatly increased if landed direct to Manchester. thus eliminating rail charges ami extra handling.
