THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES.

Mw Massey's “New” Proposals! Can anybody find in these anything of a policy ? Is there anything for the electors to take hold of and examine or admire? A more platitudinous string of paragraphs it would bo almost difficult to write. Even the secular system of education, which .existed long before Mr Massey was in public life, is to be “maintained.” Local bodies are to bo assisted to erecthouses in town and country. Money is to be provided for assistance to farmers through the Advances Department, which also existed long before Mr Massey’s Government, and despite the opposition of himself and party. Good roads, and that sort o. thing are promised, the extension of hvdro-clectrieity. etc., but these things are inevitable, no matter what party rules. Finally, Mr Massey waves the flag prettv considerably. Well, he and his party are loyal enough to the Empire, but they have no monopoly of loyalty. New Zealand did her full sjhare in the interests of the Empire long before the Reformers took office, and will do &o after the Reform I :U t.Y is dead and—we are going to sav foigotten, but it will take some time to forget the misgovernment ot the last decade. —Lvttelton limes.
