WESTLAND WAR MEMORIAL.

UN VEILING CEREMONY.

At a meeting held at the County Chambers yesterday afternoon, the following were present: Messrs G. A. Berry (Mayor) in the Chair Mrs Butler (representing Lady Liverpool Committee), Revds. A. C. T. Burdins and J. F. Jack, Messrs A. A. Andrews, lion Treasurer and 1). J. Evans, hon Secretary. A report was read in respect to the financial position showing the fund in a satisfactory position. The collections to date had been £1399 6s 4d. It was reported Colonel Young. C.M.G., D. 5.0., of Christchurch would unveil the memorial at 2.30 o’clock on Friday afternoon, the 10th inst. It was resolved to extend invitations to the Mayors of the neighbouring towns and to invite the Returned Soldiers’ Organisations, as well as the members of the legislature. It was stated application had been made to delay the trains to Ross and Grey month on the afternoon of the occasion until o p.m. The Secretary reported Captain Stedman had promised the full cooperation of the Territorials and Cadets, and visiting officers would attend also. It was hoped employers would arrange to let their men off for the afternoon, and in connection with this suggestion it was decided to ask tho local bodies to declare a public half-holiday for the town and district. The afternoon’s programme was then drawn up, and the order of the ceremonial will ho printed and circulated. The hymn “O God, Our Help in Ages Past” was selected to be sung as also the National Anthem. It was decided to nsk the choirs to join

1 with the Band in assisting to lead the singing. A reading of scripture and a prayer were arranged for by the clergy. The Mayor will preside and control the gathering wlierat Col. Young will unveil the memorial and deliver the occasional address. Mr \V. E. I-cadley, of Christchurch, Secretary of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, of which this district is a branch, will bo invited to speak also.

It is hoped to have the school children marshalled and to march from their respective schools to Cass Square in time for the ceremony. It was decided to ask the Scouts. Red Cross, and Nursing Associations to take part in tho gathering. A platform will be erected for the speakers and seats provided for the parents and friends of the fallen whose names art on the roll of honor. During the ceremony an opportunity will be afforded to deposit wreaths on the cenotaph. It has been sug gested that the various schools liiigli arrange to participate in this part ol the function in memory of ex-scholar? who fell in the war. It was resolved that a collection be taken up to defray the expenses foi the day and to create a fund for the purchase of two or more ornamenta' seats for the ground for the use oi visitors inspecting the memorial.

The expenses for the collection of this sum have been about £36 covering printing of circulars and subscription lists, postages and advertising the appeal for financial support.
