A WORLD'S Record.
hY. X./. Kit I ITS lAX CO\Y . I MAI.US OK ItI'TTKH' KAT IX ,‘i(in I) AYS. Wln'ii it is considered that tin* nvorago production nl' tlw dairy cow in New Zealand is loss than lfiOlbs butter- j fill each year, even the layman will recognise what a wonderful cow it is | that can produce IMolhs of Imlterfat j in .‘Win dins. This record has just been . eoinpletod by a Friesian cow in r l'ara- i naUi, and the secretary ®f the Xew | 7. eland Friesian Association has sup-, plied the oliieial lieu res of this per- | formance as cheeked by the Director: of the Dairy Division of the Depart- j ment of Agriculture, as follows:—; ,‘il,lll2.olbs of milk and Mlo.24]bs of hutterfat in .'111.') days. The Friesian raw that lias made this record is named Aleartra C'lothildu I’ietje and she is owned by .Mr Yeriiou Marx, of Mangatoki, Taranaki. 'l'liis young breeder—for this is the first cow that ho over owned—purchased the champion for (if) guineas, and is reported to have refused an offer of 1000 guineas for her. Me has. however, sold a yearling bull from her, born at the commencement of her test, for Oof) • guineas.
The record production of hutterfat ; for all breeds in the Southern Hem is- ! nhere was previously held by a Friesian cow. This cow, Burkepje Sylvia Posch, I liroduccd 9831bs of hutterfat in 365 days. The record nojv made by the ! Taranaki-owned cow surpasses this by | -102 lbs of hutterfat. Not only lias ATr i Afarx’.s cow made a record milk and t hutterfat production for the Southern : Hemisphere, hut under conditions that Ibis test was made it is a world’s re- ' eci-d for both milk and hutterfat production, hut it is believed that only . one cow in the world, an Americanowned Friesian, has beaten this record, •
and thst cow was milked four times a dav.
Aleartrn Clothikle Pietje has averaged 85.08 lbs of milk daily (the average Imttorfat content of which was 3.(55 par cent.), or, to be more explicit, 32 quarts or (5-1 (lints of milkdaily throughout the year. Wellington milk consumers, will have no difficulty in estimating the daily earnings of this wonderful cow.
It- is noteworthy that Aleartrn ( lot hilde Pietje, her sire and her dam were all bred in New Zealand. The black anil white breed which was formerly known ns Holstein-Friesian, is becoming very popular throughout the Dominion and a very lucrative exporttrade with Australia, etc., has been developing of recent years, and there is little doubt that this latest record by a Friesian cow will secure further recognition for the breed. Evert world’s record for milk and butterfnt production as well as the best record for each class of dairy cow (according to age) ill the Dominoin is held by a Friesian cow.
The breed’s progress in the Dominion has been wonderful, the membership of the New Zealand Association having reached (500 in less than 10 years. It is reported also that many other fine records bv Friesian cows and heifers are nearing completion and perhaps the breed will ho credited with another world’s record very shortly. The other breeds do not compare with the Friesian for production of butterfat, as the highest is ITTIlis less than the record now announced, w'-ile the next best is 3151bs less.
