Fatality at Sea.

MEN KI’OM. MATATUA DROWNED. DUNEDIN, Oct, 27. A distressing fatality occurred oil hoard the Shaw, Seville, and Albion liner Matatua in August last, when the. chief officer (Mr Sidney Abbot) and two or three seamen lost their lives. Details of the fatality have not yet reached the Dominion, but the fact that several men were lost: was gleaned from the officers of the liner Muhin when the vessel reached Dunedin this morning front Glasgow. According to the reports which reached England before the Afahia left for Glasgow, the accident was caused !>v a boat capsizing in the. falls. It appears that a member of the crew fell overboard, and when the boat, which had been manned in charge of Air Abbot, capsized, the crew were, thrown into the water.

The Matatua on that voyage was bound from New Zealand |X>rts to England, via the Capo. The accident occurred off Dakar, on the African coast. Afr Abbot was well known throughout New Zealand and Australia, and had many friends at the principal ports of both countries. Tic had been trading to Australasia for many years, and had been on the Matntua for a considerable time.
