BOWLING.

The Hokitika Bowling Club opened the season on Saturday afternoon when there was a good attendance of players but not a great number of visitors. The green proved in fairly good order, being on the heavy side owing to recent rain. The formal opening took place about 2.G0 p.m. the President (Mr Wm. Braddon) expressing the hope that the season would prove an enjoyable one and his regret that there were not more present at the open invitation extended. He then formally declared the green open, Mrs Braddon rolling up the first bowl amidst applause. Play then commenced sides being chosen by the Presiden (Mr W. Braddon) and Vice-President (Mr G. H. Blank). During an interval a dainty afternoon tea was supplied by Mesdames Braddon and Blank who were the hostesses for the afternoon, and was fully appreciated by visitors and players. The President then took the opportunity of presenting the Duncan Cup to bold for thp year to Mr D. Stevenson, who lias now won the singles championship on six occasions out of the 13 yearly contest*.

Mr Brartcion also present the pair of hamlsome gold medals presented l>y Mr J. J. Mclntosh for ft handicap pairs competition last season. These were won hv Messrs 11. Stevenson and J. Bain from scratch. Tn presenting the trophies Mr Braddon expressed appreciation of the generosity of the donor, and congratulated the winners on their success. Mr Stevenson in briefly acknowledging both presentations said lie intended doing his best to win the championship on further occasions and stated that the handsome gold trophy just presented was the first lie had won at bowling, to hold, and lie would accordingly value it all the more. The President then read a telegram conveying to himself and members good wishes for a successful season from the ex-President Mr R. S. Galbraith from Invercargill. Received with applause. Mr T. \V. Mruce then read an amusing skit on bowls that was heartily applauded. The play resulted as follows:
