J'h the course of time wo may expect to see tlie British Liberal Party regaining its place, and standing between the extremes of socialism and reaction. That is the true part of Liberalism. Whether for the time being the Liberals may be numerically strong or weak in the House of Conimoiis—or in any Parliament within the Empire—their task is none the less plain, their duty clear. They must stand now as always for progress on safe lines, building on sound lines and making every step that may be gained a solid foundation for the next. The Conservative Party at the general election in the Mother Country, and the Conservative Party at the New Zealand elections, will no doubt pose as the only safe guardians of the nation, and will describe Liberals, Radicals and Labourites as enemies of society, but sooner or later the good sense of the community will be expressed in renewed confidence in the Liberal Party, which again and again has proved itself the only party that stands fqr both pro? gresß and safety,—Lyttelton Times,
