ARRIVES IN AUSTRALIA

Tim first German steamer to arrive in Australia since the war has just berthed in Sydney. She is the Ger-in...i-Austi‘a*ia line cargo steamer Hanau, and her arrival marks the resumption of the German mercantile marine’s activities in Australian trade. The vessel’s cargo consists mainly ol toys and pianos. Many of her ere" have been in Australia previously, and seme of them were interned here In conjunction with the Norddeutscher Lloyd and Holt’s Blue Funnel lines, the Gmian-Australia Company will conduct a monthly service from Hamburg to Australian ports. Eventually, when trade between the two countries has Id-come more settled, the three companies .doubtless will operate independentlv. In marine circles it is anticipated that it will not be very long before the German companies reenter the Continental-Australiall pnsseimer trade with their handsome and distinctive liners, which were so familiar in Australian ports before the war Whether the ultimate resumption of these activities will bring about any urea! alteration in freights and fares is a matter of conjecture only at present.
