Westland Branch Canterbury Progress League.
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 17th
The monthly meeting of the; local branch was held at the County' Chambers at 7.30 o’clock. Present: Mr DJ. Evans (President) Dr Teichelmann, Messrs J. Ritchie, J. C. Mncfarlane, A. G. Pilkington and J. TV. Morris, (lion. Secretary). The minutes of the previous meeting were confirmed and outward corresi ondence approvod. INAVIAR.D CORIIESPONDKNCE. From Philosophical Institute, Christchurch, notifying proposal to give illustrated lantern lectures at the Town Hall (particulars previously published). —Received.
From AY. E. A. Greymouth Branch, suggesting Nov. 2nd and 3rd as the most suitable dates for the visiting lecturers. —Received and agreed to. It was resolved to invite senior scholars from the school to the lectures. Dr Teichelmann kindly, placed his lantern plant at the disposal of the lecturers, which was accepted with thanks. It was announced the lectures would he free, hut a collection would be taken up to defray local expenses. It was decided jf convenient to take the visiting scientists to Lake Kanieri and any other points of local interest which time permitted. It was resolved to apply for the use of the Town Hall for the lectures on the two nights and to invite the patronage of the Mayor and councillors.
From T. E. Y. Seddon M.P. agiee ing to represent the Branch at the public deputation at Wellington in legat'd to speeding up the Buller Gorge railway: also stating he had moved regarding the lease for the railway betel at Otira. and was to see the Minister and General Manager again.—Received with thanks. From Westlnd Branch, Automobile Association, asking support of League in having the Flowery Creek-Kumara new road completed.—Received . and agreed to. Tt was reported a \ ote for £4OO now appeared on the Estimates, and it was decided to ask the amount he authorised for expenditure. From A. and R. Graham, Waiho Gorge, forwarding a donation of £5 to the fluids of the League.—Received with thanks. From Kokatahi Dairy Coy. contributing £5 os to the League’s funds.Received with thanks. It was re.mlv. ed to apply for promised contributions from other sources to enable liabilities to be discharged. Mr Pilkington reported that the Borough loan proposals would soon Ih> taken in hand, and a poll hold in regard to the public works scheme. Mr Pilkington stated a. return was being prepared regarding the unlet reserves and the question of utilising same for building sites would be gone into.—Approved. Tt was reported that tbe Public Works Estimates available that evening disclosed a substantial amount of money in votes for' bridge works in South Westland. including small bridge? between Hokitika, and Waiho; also provision for AVnitnngi bridge, and a preliminary vote for AYaibo bridge as well as ,n vote to continue Waikukupa bridge. In reply to Mr Ritchie it was stated there was a vote of £7OO
for Bruce Bay’ landing at Flower Pot, where it was proposed to place a crane for unloading boats with a tramway to the main land. The statement was received with satisfaetion. The meeting rose at B.ha p.m.
