Owing to the rapid development oi the growing of cotton itt Queensland, attention is being given in the dominion to the possibility oi establishing mills lor the manufacture of cotton piece goods. Ihe annual report cl the Board of Trade states:—Experts consider that tin- climates of Southland and the WVst Coast afford ideal con-
ditions for the manufacture of cotton. As New Zealand has it suitable c!imat< and is so much nearer to Qmcnsland than any of the Old World mills, the possibilities of establishing this important industry in the dominion should he fully examined. In this connection it should he pointed out that Queensland's raw cotton cron amounted in 192(1. to 50.0001 b; in done of hist vent the crop was estimated at 4,500.0001 b: and reports non to hand show that 10.000,000 acres of hind in Queensland are suitable for the cultivation of cotton. and that its growing Is being encouraged hv State subsidy. Ihe manufacturers of Great Britain at"' alive to the fact that unless they establish mills nearer their markets, loreigners may take advantage of the position in order to compete with importations or British cotton goods into this and other countries of the Eastern Hemispheres.
