Influenza Outbreak.

AUCKLAND, Oct. 11
The District Health Officer states that aboard the Chatham there are a few cases of mild influenza. Tho warship is going to a quarantine anchorage to-morrow morning as a precautionary measure. Since Oct. Ist there have been fifteen eases of sickness aboard, not all of influenza, ns three or four cases bad pneumonia, one case of pneumonia following inflenzn. The Mayor Mr ,T. H. Ounson, telegraphed to Hon C. J. Parr, Minister of Health: "1 am concerned at, tho revival of pneumonic influenza. There are several cases in the city and district. As these are not notifiable the Health Office is not in a position thoroughly to be posted to stop a more serious position through cases entering the port by shipping. I understand there tire a number of cases on the Chatham. I earnestly ask you not to allow these cases to land, but to require them to go to Quarantine Island. I would like Dr Frengley to come to Auckland to investigate the position with Dr Hughes, in whom we have confidence. In view of the local cases and other matters reported, together with the outbreak in Australia, we consider it our dutv to place the matter before you. and assure you of the fullest co-operation. Tho public should be advised and realise the position to ensure adequate (lifeguards and personal care.” Mr Gunson, in bis stateemiit. savs there is no need for alarm, but Iho public should be warned. WELLINGTON, Oct. 12 The Minister of Health, interviewed regarding tho reported eases of influenza aboard the warship Chatham, said when he was advised by the Minister of Defence that the vessel was approaching Auckland with a few eases of influenza, showing pneumonic symptoms, lie instructed T)r Frengley that Dr TTughe«, the medical officer of Ifisilth at Auckland, should proceed with the Port Health Officer, Dr man. to the ship and report to Wellington.
Hon C. ■ Parr added: —"1 directed tlyit under no circumstances was the Chatham to be granted pratique without reference to myself and the head of the Health Department. Dr Hughes telephoned at ten o’clock last night that he had examined the ship, and there were some cases of influenza, with pulmonary symptoms, although not severe. T directed that the - shin he sent to the Motuilii quarantine station, where she will he detained till a clean hill of health is produced.
