Teachers’ Grading List.

110 NC. .I.' PA I tH’S VIEWS.

WELLINGTON, October 9. Opposition was shown at> a recent, meeting of school committees in Palmerston North to the operation ot the primary schools teachers’ grading system. This view v.as not shared by the teachers, whose executive strongly opposed the committee’s views, and hoped the Minister would not allow the present grading list to he superseded. In reply, the Hon. C. .T. Pan’ states: ;‘ As chairman of an Education Board for many years I personally had experience of.the old system of appointments under which the local authorities were given almost absolute discretion as to whom they would .select. Later, in the same capacity, I was instrumental in bringing about the first wading system in tjhe large Auckland district. I bare thus had experience of both the old and new ideas on the matter, and I am able to say that f consider that to depart from the grading system based on the information of expert inspectors would he a national misfortune, not only for the teachers, lmt for the pupils and all concerned in education. The view taken by the school committees at Palmerston North was quite retrograde, and I notice with satisfaction that a similar view put forward by Mr Durward at the recent Education Boards eontereiicc found little or no support.”
