“ Snap Shots ” concluded their season on Saturday night in the presence of a good audience. The company is a merry and bright one, and every item found favour with a pleased audience. All the items were well produced, and the entertainment sparkled with many good numbers. When the Fire Brigade assembled at the station on Saturday night after the fire alarm Supt Braddon complimented members on their vary fine '.turnout. Luckily Itheir services were, not required to. any extent, but it would have been serious if the fire lr.(d broken out a couple of hours biter. The question of the fire alnnn in the east of Sale Street section was referred to by Foreman Williams, and it was resolved to make enquiries with a view to having an improvement made for giving the alarm in that area there being no direct telephone connection with the fire station at present. The high flood on Friday night in the Little Waitaha river is reported to have done some damage to the south approach of the Kakapotahi bridge lately constructed by the County Council. The river was very high during the night, the Hood waters being within <i few inches of the bridge and stringers. The point attacked was protected lately with stone-facing, hut the flood undermined the work, and further eroded the hank, displacing the sill of the bridge. Temporary repairs wore effected on Saturday to permit vehicle traffic crossing the bridge, and more permanent week in the way' of future protection will now he done.

The firebell at No 1 station rang out an alarm on Saturday night at 10.35 o’clock. The scenei of the outbreak was Renton and Go’s general ironmongery store. Luckily the flnm'e.s were seen when in an incipient stage through a window facing the Red Lion Hotel, and the alarm being at once -given, a few buckets oi wat-ur got the blaze under, access being made through the side window. The performance at Princess Theatre had justconcluded and in a brief space Hamilton Street was filled with people, while the Fire Brigade under Supt Braddon and Deputy Supt Davidson were present in full force, a line of hose being ran nut very promptly, hut luckily tin* water was not- required. The outbreak 1 was in the eastowi section of the shop in a barrel where the sweepings are* gathered. AA hcil the shop closed at 9 o’clock everything was apparently safe. It was extremely lucky that the flames were discovered so quickly, as quite adjacent to the outbreak there was ft large quantity of straw used for packing, while tlere was n. large stock of oils c>in close proximity. The damage done was of a, very nominal nature, thanks to ihe prompt alarm. The Fire Brigade had oho of the largest parades practically every member being present. A couple of those assisting iad their hands cut by glass v.-u-n getting through the window, which had to he broken to enable an entrance to be quickly made.

In the House on Friday, Mr Scddon asked where the: State School of Forestry was to be established. He said there was £3(XX) on the estimates last year, , hut no item this year. He did not urge the Minister to spend money unnecessarily, but the Director ol Forestry had recommended that such a school should he established and there was a general impression in the South that the school should be established in Canterbury, preferably ill conjunction with Canterbury College. Sir Heaton Rhodes said they - must economise, therefore the item was cut off tliis year’s estimates. No decision had yet been arrived at as to where the school would be located.
