WHISKY MEN’S RUSH.
XBW YORK, Aug. 20. Cndcr tlic noses of 100 Customs inspectors :unl pier police six men went on board the White Star liner Homeric, on her arrival in dock here from Southampton and during the examination of the luggage of passengers loaded themselves with whisky in bottles. Returning to the dock, they escaped in a motor boat. The men ivero threading their wav among the throng of passengers . and stacks of luggage on the pier, when the Customs guard saw the necks of two bottles protruding from the pockets of one of the party, each of whom was carrying a package in either hand. The guard challenged, whereupon the men ran to the waiting motor beat at the end of the pier and jumped in. As the passengers scattered at flic sound of-the Custom men’s revolvers, the smugglers waved their hands derisively and disappeared among fhe shipping in the river. A hail of lmllets followed them. The authorities estimate that the men got away with a dozen bottles each.
