Petrie (formerly of Grevmoutli) had been selected as tbe Liberal candidate for the ICnikato seat, gave rise to ail objection among the Party supporters who communicated with Mr T. Wil-, ford. i He has replied, said that Mr Petrie lias not been accepted by tho Party nor had he, as the Party Leader, had any communication with the announced candidate,. Mr Petrie now retires from the contest, cancelling his announced meetings, and ho has left tile district. Liberal delegates will hold a meeting at Te Awnmutii on Saturday to select a candidate, and they have asked Mr Wilford to attend.
CEMENT WORKS FATALITY. AUCKLAND, October 5. Charles Campbell, oged 53. died at the hospital as the result of burns and injuries to tbe spine received at the fire at Wilson’s cement works, Warkworfli. on Tuesday, while assisting to remove the debris. A pot tion of the building collapsed, precipitating him 45 feet. Deceased was married and had two daughters. He was a native of Scotland and had been at Wadsworth fifteen years. The fire lias idled 50 men.
A CANDIDATE. NAPTEII, Oct 5. Mr A. E. Jnll, Chairman of the Napier Harbour Board, who has oil several evasions contested Waipawa seat- in the Liberal interests against Sir George Hunter, lias consented to contest the Napier seat as an Independent.
DEATH OF MR EVANS. S.M. NELSON. Oet ii. Obituary.—Mr .lames Sim Evans, Stipendiary Magistrate at Nivlsou for thirteen years. He practised law at Invercargill and was appointed to the bench at Qu< enstown. He was Chairman of several /Royal Commissions, and of the Military Service Board.

COST OF LIVING. WELLINGTON. Ocl li. At. the ArHitratioai Court, to-day •Justice Frasier gave the proiiouneenieilt of the Court re the cost of living and relation to wages. He said: ‘■The measure ill 'wages of the cost of living lias fallen during the past halfyear to an extent that would reduce ■tile adult male; wage by 3s per week. If-the principle adopted in the former wage revision is followed, the corresponding reductions - for adult females and juniors are Is (id and Is per week respectively. This pronouncement is not a judgment on an order ol tin' Court, but simply a statement ol the movement in the cost ol living, as represented in wages." A sitting of tile Court will be held in November to bear representatives of employers mul workers in regard to other considerations which should weigh with the Court ill determining whether wage sarc to be reduced, and if so by what amount.
