CAPT. COOK’S DIARY. LANDING REFERENCES MISSING. WELLINGTON, September 29. It has been customary for some years for Fellows of the Royal Colonial Institute, Gisborne, to celebrate by an appropriate function the anniversary of the landing of Captain Cook at Poverty on his discovery of New Zealand. As the time for that ceremony is approaching Air Kirk local honorary corresponding secretary of the Institute, who is visiting Wellington paid a visit t oAleximder Turnbull Library with a vie v.to perusing the log written hv (’apt. Cook. This almost vrieelesx record of the historic voyage of the great navigator is one of the most eliei islied possessions of the Library. It is in an excellent stati of preservation despite its age of lo! years. Kirk in searching for Cook’s account of the entry to Poverty Bin found the pages of log dated Iron October 7tli to October loth eoverinj the period of Cook’s landing off Ttiran gaimi river, and his subsequent Inndinj where now stands the town of Dishorn ami his departure northwards had heel cut from the diary. The librarians at lentioii was at once called to the mat ter, hut it cannot now apparently b discovered whether there pages wer rut from Uie Look Lefore it cam into the possession of the late Al Turnbull or whether the ywerc cut on since the hook lias been made avail able to the public. No doubt the must still he hi existence, hut whetlie in New Zealand or elsewhere is a mot point. Time may reveal their when nbouts. for undoubtedly they nr amongst the most valuable records c our earliest days n s pnrt of the gren Fmpire.
