The union, how- | ever, states it is prepared to co-operate j with the Council. The Board of Trade has declared a new living wage for male adults of £3 )Bs. the same as it previously had , fixed fbefore the Labour Government j intervened to prevent the award com- j ipg into force). j A conference between the Disputes Committee, the Trades Hall and the j Engineers’ Union has failed to reach j any decision on tin' -18-hour week qiies- j lion. MELBOURNE. Sept. 30. In the House of Representatives Mr Hughes in a statement on the Near East said the position was changing every moment, it now pointed towards peace, not towards war. He suggested Uarliamcnt should not he prorogued, if war were probable.
