AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION. AMERICAN TARIFF LAW. BRITISH CAPTAIN’S PROTEST. WASHINGTON, September 26. It is officially announced that Cabinet has decided to caution the prohibition enforcement bureau not to search foreign ships for contraband liquor beyond the three mile limit. This is evidently the result of the diplomatic conversations cabled on July 2oth. It is especially interesting in view of the report that the British Government is preparing a protest against any application of the revenue clause in the new Tariff Bill, which provides for search and seizure of vessels found within twelve nautical miles of the limit. Sir K. Geddes yesterday talked to Mr Hughes and Mr Harding and presumably the matter was brought up. The Revenue Department is eager to obtain a certified ruling, following a recent attempt to seize a liquor laden schooner flying the British flag, which was found outside the three mile limit, but within the twelve mile limit. The ship’s skipper pointed to the British flag and threatened to shoot the first man who attempted to board the. craft, whereupon the revenue officers withdrew.
