EXCELSIORS BEAT UNITED,
Tho challenge match on Cass Square on Saturday afternoon between the United and Excelsior senior teams for tlTe Breeze Shield, took place on a wet groin ml consequent on tho heavy rain that fell earlier in the day, and resulted in a win for Excelsiors by 6 points (a try by Freitas, and a penalty goal by Ross) to nil. The game was not of great interest to watch, and there were only occasioned flashes of back play, though the partisans of both sides kept up a continual roar of encouragement during the play. Milt. Dowell was referee. JUNIOR GAME. A team from Cobden came down and played a mixed team of Kiwi juniors and others, the latter winning by 17 to 5 after a friendly tussle. Mr Sumner was referee. SOCCER FOOTBALL. The match between Canterbury and the combined team of Blackball and Moonlight was played at Blackball on Friday last in showery weather before u good crowd of spectators. A good fast game resulted in a win for the, combined team by A goals to 3.
CANTERBURY V. WEST COAST. This gilinc at Victoria. Park on Saturday, despite adverse weather, proved a good, even tussle. Tn the early stages the Canterbury proved tho nippier team, but in the last quarter of an hour West Coast- seemed to bo able to elo anything but score. Yesterdav afternoon the match between Bnlier (challengers) and Nelson (holders) for the Scddon Shield was played here. Tt. resulted in a drawn game. Nelson and Butler scoring six points each. There was tine weather and a large crowd prevent. Tho game was mostly a forward one the Bn Her pack holding the upper hand in the first spoil. The second spell was more even. For Bailor Svenson and Rainier goaled from marks. Grant scored a trv for Nelson, and Watson kicked a goal from a mark. Nelson retains thr shield. AUCKLAND BEAT WELLINGTON. AUCKLAND, Sept 24.
