LEAGUE OF NATIONS.
trHTRM.IAN AND N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION. LEAGUE’S DEBATE. LONDON, Sept 23. The Australian Press correspondent at Geneva states that the Political Committee of the League of Nations .has debated three Near East proposals. One was made by Dr Nansen, re questing the Council of the League to consider what measures should be taken with a view to the cessation of the hostilities in the Near East, by offering the belligerents the League’s good offices. •
Another proposal was by lit. Hon Air Fisher on behalf of the British Government, a motion affirming “that the League viewed with dismay the possibility of the prolongation of war in the Near East, but noted with satisfaction that a conference of the Powers concerned \vas proposed, and the Council of the' League would be prepared to render any assistance, if invited by the negotiating powers, to do so.
The third was a resolution proposed by Count Isliii (Japan), which sought to combine the other two. Eventually it was referred to the I) ra fti n g Commit toe. Sir J. Cook, Air Sheldon and Justice Rich (of Australia) were present. Sir J. Cook appealed to the Powers to avail themselves of the machinery of the League to bring about a settlement.
