Reporting to the Buller Hospital Vtoaril on Tuesday last the Medical Superintendent of Westport Hospita, stated:—“During my recent visit to Hokitika ] spent an afternoon going through the Mental Hospital. Generally speaking the conditions for housing and treating patients are deplorable, and in my opinion, and that of several medical men to whom 1 have spoken, the place is a disgrace to any civilised country. 1 am bringing this matter before the Board as this of course is the institution to which patients from this district must all be sent. 1 would suggest that a member or members of your Board be sent to see the place and T am certain they will agree with me that it is a matter of urgency for the people of the West Coast to take steps to have the matter attended to at once.
