COUNCI 1/ MEETING

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER. 18,

The Council met at 7.40 p.m. Present: Dr Teiehelmann (President), W. Braddon, J. Shivas, J. Rooney, J. King, A. B. King, T. W. Bruce and D. J. Evans (lion. see). The minutes of the previous meeting were confirmed, and the outward correspondence approved, INWA ltD CORR ESPONDENCE. From Smith and Anthony Ltd., Christchurch, forwarding blank road map of Westland to fill in particulars of bridges, fords, hotels, garages etc., for the information of touring nutomobilists.—Received, It was reported I the request had been attended to and the information forwarded to Christchurch,

From Department of Internal Affairs, acknowledging correspondence in respect to the taking of opossums in the Grey Valley.—Received.

From Same, stating there was a difficulty in some districts in securing the certificate of the Ranger to the statement necessary in. connection with the sale of opossum skins, and asking suggestions in the matter..—Received. It was explained a difficulty of the nature referred to had arisen locally. It was resolved to suggest that additional rangers he appointed as suggested hv the Department to include the police of the district, ft was resolved further that the seasons for taking opossums should he uniform in tlie ease of adjoining acclimatisation districts, and the Department will he advised of this suggestion also.

From NX. Acclimatisation Societies Association in respect to the minimum penalty for shooting without license.— Received. It was resolved to suggest that the minimum penalty for the offence referred to he reduced to £2. From Same, forwarding copy of annual balance sheet.—Received. From Auckland Acclimatisation Society, supplying copy of letter to Minister of Marine suggesting that in future the importation of Atlantic salmoll he taken up ill lieu of quinnnt salmon.—Received. The opinion was expressed that the remarks from the Auckland Society in respect to quinnnt salmon were not borne out by local experience. From Commissioner uf Crown Lands, notifying that by gazette notice the reserve at Lake Kanieri was now vested in the Society as a reserve for acclimatisation purposes.—Received with thanks.

From W. Fogwell, caretaker, reporting on successful hatching ot 250,000 trout fry from the Grey Society, and stating 50,000 quinnnt fry for local distribution would he available at the end of the month ; also reporting the launch was running satis faetorily; thanking the Society 1 ' past consideration, and intimating i' ; services would cud at the (lose oi lb” month.—Received. The resignation was accepted with regret. Matters arising out of the report were dis cussed.

From 0. X. Gifford. reporting on condition of Brooke motor engine installed in the launch and stating same was satisfactory except tor attention necessary to one or two small matters, hut leaving in abeyance the question whether reversing gear was necessary. deceived. The Chairman reported in regard to the matter of the reversing gear, and the matter was left for further enquiry with the Chairman. From X. 0. Fairlie. Kanieri, wit' seven years experience with motor machinerv, applying for the position ol caretaker at Lake Kanieri.—Received and appointment approved unanimously, applicant to take up duty on Ist October if possible. It was resolved to recommend the caretaker he appointed a ranger under the Animals’ Protection Act. The meeting rose at S.-IO p.m.
