CONDITION of the cemeteries. I SYDNEY. September 0. i Arcording to a report received by the Federal Government from tile War Graves Commission, many people have been visiting the battlefield and cemeteries at Gallipoli. Two special tours were arranged and many Australians and New Zealanders were included in the parties. There are now 32 cemeteries on the Peninsula. Of these 21 are situated at Anzac, six at Cape Holies, four at Savin- Ray, and one at Kalid Ruhr. Stone protection walls have been constructed round nine of the cemeteries at Anzac. and the work is being proneeded with on the monuments at the embarkation points. It is expected that the first headstones will an'ive at | Anzac for erection in September. , Every effort is being made to keep the I cemeteries free from weeds, and the I visitors expressed keen satisfaction with the conditions. “Those whose loved ones sleep on Gallipoli.” says the report, “may be assured that their rest- • ing places will be always safeguarded. Our staff consists of eight Australians, four Englishmen and two New Zealanders. Great credit is due. to them for the way they have stuck to the workthrough the trying heat in the summer and the blizzards in the winter. We should very much like to have a visit from an official Australian representative. ” The report expresses thanks to j the Army and Navy authorities, Con- j stantinople, for the help received. The local Greek authorities have also assisted.
