To-day at the Kosehill Races the second contest between Gloaming and Bcauford took place. HILL STAKES. Gloaming (G. Young) 1 Bcauford (.Wood) 2 Soorak (M.imro) 3 Won by .lj lengths, with five lenglhs between second and third. The time was 1.38 J.
Gloaming crowned himself with fresh glory by the decisive fashion in which he disposed of Bcauford in record time for the Rosehill Course.
According to the great hulk of the turf cognoscenti, Bcauford, since the previous Saturday, had merited a special pedestal in Australasian turfdum, as the result of his triumphs over Eurythmic and Gloaming, but many of the latter’s admirers were still confident that he yould turn the tables with the weather and course conditions favourable.
Despite ominous clouds in the forenoon, the weather was beautiful, hut. the course was heavy.
REAUKORI) GETS GOOD START. When the harrier rose, Gloaming was taught side on, hut he quickly moved into fourth position. Bcauford, however, wont to the front almost at the jump. At thif five furlongs mark Reaiifrtrd was two lengths clear ahead of Wish Wynne. Gloaming was then two and a half lengths further hack. Rounding the bend, Gloaming gained on Wisli Wynne. On entering t lie straight Gloaming sot cut after I; an ford. To the great astonishment of the crowd, the New Zealander overhauled the leader, who appeared unable even to challenge the visitor in the final furlong to the post. The croud, which had been momentarily dumbed In- the easy manner in which Gloaming had accomplished his victory, quickly realised the position, and lustily cheered the visitor until he was taken hack to the saddling paddock. PRESS; COMMENT ON RACE. SYDNEY. Sept. 17. T! .re was a record crowd at Rosehill to see the Gloaniing-Heauford battle. The “Sunday Sun” says:—When the New Zealander challenged Beauford. he went past him just as decisively as Bcauford passed him (Gloaming) on the previous Saturday. The Newcastle horse could go no faster, whereas Gloaming had a kick left, which landed the victory. He proved to have more pace than he was credited with, hut the lustre of Bcauford is not dimmed by the fact that, with 9.7 up. he finished Uj lengths behind the mighty New Zealander.
