TJho monthly meeting of the Westland Progress League takes place at 7.30 o’clock to-morrow night.

A meeting of the Westland Acclimatisation Society will he held at- 7.30 o’clock this evening. Included in the business will he the appointment of a caretaker for the hatchery.

Mr P. Cohen who has been in charge of the Roefton the New Zealand Clothing Factory for some years past, has received notice of transference to tho Christchurch branch. His assistant, Mr A. Hoy,, takes up the position of assistant at the Hokitika branch of the H.U. firm.

Reports of good returns from the Riniu dredge, continue to find their way mbnut the community. The last return was said to ho in the vicinity of seven hundred ounces of go Id. The value would he in the region of £3OOO and the period of working about twelve days. Satisfaction continues to be expressed at the payable results being won.

The Lyttelton Times says:—“An industrial exhibition to commemorate the Westland jubilee is proposed tor 1024, at Hokitika. -Mr P. R. Climie, organiser of the Canterbury Progress League, mentioned this fait to the executive of the Dominion Industrial Exhibition. Mr Climie said that Mr D. J. Evans, honorary secretary, of the movement to conduct the exhibition, proposed visiting Christchurch about September 21. It was decided that members of the executive should meet Mr Evans and discuss with him tentative proposals for the suggested Hokitika exhibition. Mr R. Wild will also attend the meeting.

A painful and serious accident occurred to Mrs G. B. Shepherd of Bui lor Road, Roefton, on Thursday, says the Inuiignhua Times. It appears that .Mrs Shepherd had gone to h-rig clothes from a line erected in one el her paddocks, and while in the act ol doiim this was suddenly rushed by « cow and hurled to the ground, and severely gored, the animal’s horn >nUicting an ugly wound which required six stitches. Mrs Shepherd had a miraculous escape from fatal injury, as the event was unnoticed by anybody, flic lady eventually frightening tlie animal off. *

A reserved judgment has been delivered by Air Justice Adams, in a case brought John Watson (Mr F. D. Snrgnt), against the Grey County Council (Mr IV. J. Joyce), to quash by-laws of the Grey County Council. Tice case was heard at last Supreme Court sessions there. The judgment states the by-law was a vexatious one. An order would he made quashing the first clause of Part 11 of tlie by-law. Costs £5 were to l>e paid by the defendants.
