THE MANDATES. GENEVA, Sept 14. Mr Lloyd George ;Js 'arriving on Monday at Genova. It is anticipated the Leagtio of Nations sessions will terminnjte on September 27th. Various representatives on the Mandates Commission were interviewed with reference to Mr Hughes’ defence of the Nauru Island administration of Australia. They said they appreciated the strength of the ease made out on behalf of Britain, the Commonwealth, and New Zealand, and the importance of the facts brought forward. They ask, hdwever, why not have done this in the reports submitted to the Mandates’ Commission. Sir J. Cook is stated to have told the commission that if it wanted more informaltion, the expenditure of 2d on a stamp would bring all the information wanted from Australia about the mandated territory.
LEAGUE OF NATIONS. GENEVA, September 14. Seller Olivieta, the Brazilian representative, has informed the Disarmament Commission of the League of Nations that Brazil is unable to participate in the League’s naval disarma-
ment, based on tile Washington Treaty The latter gives Brazil only two capital ships, which are entirely inadequate for her population and her coastline. It also prohibits Brazil from constructing naval yards. It is feared that Brazil’s defection may result in all the South American countries breaking away from the League.
