North Island mails and passengers connected with the West Coast express at Christchurch this morning.

The speaker contended that the wnhderihg stock of Hamilton was a menace requiring more consideration than the “tabooing” of pillion riding.
Mr T. E. Y. Seddon, left Wellington for Nelson last night to be present at the Nelson-West Coast football match for the Seddon Shield. Mr Seddon has great hopes the Coasters can win. The Hon, Snodgrass of Nelson and Mr Atmore M,P, for Nelson also proceeded to Nelson to bH present 1M the convincing ground to-day for the big match which is creating so much interest in football circles.

Tlic Anniversary Services in connection with the Methodist Sunday School will be held to-morrow morning and evening. The singing for the day will lie led by a choir of children trained for the occasion and bright and hearty singing will he a feature of the service. On Monday evening at 7.1 K) an entertainment consisting of music, dialogues etc., will lie given by the .scholars in the schoolroom.—Advt.
Major Belcher, the representative of tlie British * Empire Exhibition (1924). on arrival at Suva by the Niagara, had an interview with tin' Governor and some of the leading officials, and also met a. number of the merchants and officials at a meeting ol tlie Chamber. He explained what was being done by the authorities at Home and in the various Dominions and Colonies lie had visited. After some discussion, on the motion of Sir Maynard Hedstrom, seconded by Mr T. Horne, it was resolved to ask the Government to secure space at the Exhibition at a total cost not to exceed £15,000, of which Fiji would pay £IO,OOO and the Western Pacific High Commission the balance of £5,000.
When counsel, at Pahiatua, asked Mr S. L. P. Free, S.M., to prohibit the publication of a defendant’s name, his Worship said he was unable to comply with the request. He was afraid at tlie present time that tlie greatest fear in regard to morality was that of public opinion. People do not mind doing wrong so long as they were not caught. They did not seem to consider the moral effect of their act at all. It was simply whether they could commit offences successfully or not. The class of offence in question was particularly despicable because of tlie inconvenience caused to the public, and he pointed out the detrimental effect on such institutions if such offences were not detected.
Mr Seddon, M.P., advises that- he lias been notified that tin* Public Accounts Committee of tlie House appointed to hear evidence in connection with the gold duty, will sit at Wellington at 10,30 a.m. on Wednesday, 27th inst. Mr Seddon asks if there is any evidence forthcoming from Westland district lie-will he pleased to make nhangements for its presentation to the Committee. Tlie Kindi -Miners’ Association which has taken an interest in this.matter on behalf ol the alluvial gold minors has been notified of the position, and asked to take up the matter locally. Aliy individual miner interested who cares to make ally statement on the subject to bo considered, should compile a written statement of evidence for presentation to tlie Committee of investigation through Mr Seddon. Since tlio foregoing was in type Mr Seddon wired: “Evidence re subsidy to gold producers during the war period will bo submitted Wednesday next to the I*inane© 'Committee. If -lltimu miners have any information please forward or advise if wish to be present.” Ibo foregoing lias been communicated to tlie Secretary of tb© Association at Rimu.

Dannevirke County Council at its recent meeting decided to impose a levy of 9d per 100 feet (superficial) on all sawn timber carted over the Weber road during the summer months, and to consult its solicitor as to the legality of making a similar charge to apply all over the roads of tlie county.
From the Lyttelton Times of. 50 years ago—September 11th, 1872 “West Coast Beef Market.—A Hokitika telegram says that at a yarding of 167 cattle, West Coasters again topped the market, the best bullock making £22.
