AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION. SEAMEN GAOLED. LONDON, September 6. Thirty-one coloured seamen belonging to the steamer Wongauella were charg ed at Middlesbrough with disobeying the captain’s orders. Tlie men demanded pay to which, it was alleged, they were not entitled. "When refused the pay, the seamen refused to continue working. As a result the ship lost a. tide. Two of the ringleaders were imprisoned for four weeks and the others were hound over. The leaders said they preferred to go to prison. THIRTY NINE DEATHS. LONDON, September G. The deaths in the Whitehaven Mine disaser now total thirty-nine. Twenty-eight bodies have been recovered. Their identification is difficult, ns the bodies have been scorched and crushed by rock falls. Many bodies are identifiable only by the clothing.
ALLIES AT SMYRNA. (Received this day at 9.50 a.m.) ATHENS, September 7. Allied marines from warships have Wen instructed to assume duty in Smyrna for the ultimate protection of the Allied consulates. ft JAPAN AND RUSSIA. TOKIO, September 7. The Chan-Chun conference between Japan and Russia has adjourned, following a disagreement over the scope of the agenda. Japan also refused to recognise the Russian delegaes claim that they represent both Moscow and Chita.
MR LLOYD GEORGE. CABINET PROCEEDING. (Received this day at 9.50 a.m.) LONDON, September 7. Mr Lloyd George presided over a Cabinet meeting in connection with Irish affairs and the Near East situation. He conferred with Sir J. Craig and subsequently met the British signatories to the Irish Treaty. Mr Cosgrove may visit London after the meeting of the Dail Bireann. Mr Lloyd George returns to the country to-morrow. He lia s not definitely decided whether he will visit Geneva, though it is likely he may devote a week of his holiday thereto.
