(Received this day at 8 a.m.) LONDON, September 5. * Damage estimated at . one hundred thousand sterling was .done at. Castle Gore at Ballina, County Mayo, the Earl of Arran’s country seat, which armed men burned down. Included in the losses were valuable antiques and oil paintings. Simultaneously the Earl of Arran’s Essex seat at Brentwood was burgled, but practically nothing was taken.
IRISH APPENINGS. (Received this day at 9.50 n.m.l . LONDON, Sept. G. Nationalists were surprised by a large ambush at Glenswane. One Irregular was killed and twelve taken prisoners. Irregulars attacked army posts at Waterford. A woman was shot dead and another wounded. Nationalists in Donegal surprised ait Ireguiar flying coluiiih and captured all without firing a shot. They subsequently found six thousand rounds of ammunition, fifty bombs and other 'munitions in an adjoining house. Nationalists at Inner, surprised and ciiptured tliirty-five Irregulars. . Nationalists captured a printing machine whereon the current issue of the Irregulars’ propagandist sheet was being printed. The “Irish Times’’ champions the right of a new centre party to be born into Irish politics. The “Times” says the 'old Southern Unionists are not only willing, but anxious to assist in making the Free State. Old Constitutionalist Nationalists will he glad to join them. There are many men of character and ability in. the ranks of Sinn Fein who will find themselves almost naturally members of the new centre party. If the Free State makes a good start, Irishmen who achieved distinction in other lands, | will add strength and prestige to the moderate party.
