The Late Mr V. G. Day, S.M
The death of Air Victor Grace Day, the well-known Magistrate, took place at Wellington on Sunday.
ATr Day arrived in New Zealand in 1879 and settled in Napier, where he was articled to his uncle, Mr W. I, Rees. In 1884 Air Day was admitted as a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court by Mr Justices Gillies and in the following February he commenced practice at Tapanui, Otago. Before the close of the same year, however, he removed to Gore, where he practised until March, 1887, when lie entered into partnership with Air Rees, of Gisborne. In November. 189(5, the partnership was dissolved. Air Day established a business at Thames, Auckland, where he had a large practice, principally in native land work. Subsequently, Al.r Day was appointed as District Laud Registrar and Registrar of Deeds and Deputy Commissioner of Stamps for Westland, and lie took up his residence at Hokitika. Later, lie was offered, and accepted, a scat on the .Magisterial bench. He; travelled up and down the East 'Coast: of the South Island for a number of years, and became a well-known figure in Ashburton, Timnru, and Oamarti. He was appointed second AFngistrnte at Christchurch, with ATr S. E. McCarthy, upon the transference of the late Ah T. A. B. Bailey to New Plymouth About two yenrs ho was appointed i judge of the Assessment Court. Being j still under the retiring age, Air Day recently acted as assistant magistrate 1 and at the time of his death was enI gaged in such a capacity in AVellington.
Barn in Londoii in IRJB, Air Dsn was educated at the City of London school and at St Alatthew’s Grammai School. His father, Air William Day, being a member of the Haberdashers’ Company, of London, Air Day was entitled to compete for the Ask Scholarship, which he gained at the age of 14 years. This qualified him for a three years’ course at the King’s College School, and at the conclusion of hi term there Air Day entered the service of the London and South-Western Bank, where he remained for three years. Being a relative of the late AlW. G. Grace, the famous cricketer, Air Day naturally took a keen interest in cricket, hut of late years he was an enthusiastic follower of bowls.
ATr Day was married on three occasions. Ho had a family of four daughters by the first wife, and a son | and a daughter by the second wife. He is survived by his third wife. Tl e only son, Captain Edward Day, is aide de c-nttip to tlie Governor of the Straits Settlement, and saw active service in the Great War arid in India. Dr Sylvia Day, of Timnru, is a daughter of the .deceased gentleman, another being Ahs Craddock, of Little River. The late Mr Day was a man of kindly disposition and humane characteristics, and liis death will he regretted hv liinnv all over the Dominion.
